Cumbria - The English Lake District

18-24 July 2002

During our July break I took Angela up to Cumbria in the Lake District for her first camping experience. The trip took us through some of the most beautiful scenery that England has to offer, from the southern lake Windermere, where we visited the home of Beatrix Potter. Then westward across the Hardknott Pass to Ravenglass and Eskdale, Whitehaven, and then back east through Keswick to Ullswater and then home again to London. Here are some pictures with stories from our adventures...

Night One- some place I can't remember just south of Cumbria

This is my poor over-used tent that I used while backpacking around Europe, while we were pitching it at 1am in the morning (after driving up from London) one of the poles broke, so we taped it up and managed to make it through the night.

The first main stop was Lake Windermere.

We stayed in two campsites there and saw some great sights such as Beatrix Potter's Hill Top, which is Beatrix Potter's former home.

Night Two and Three- Hardknott Pass, Eskdale and Ravenglass

After Windermere we drove west through the Hard Knott Pass, to Eskdale and Ravenglass, where we went on a miniature railway.

Once we made it alive over the pass, we travelled to Eskdale and stayed in a campsite under tree cover which had a great view over farmlands. The highlight to this part of the trip was the Ravenglass Railway.

Lake Ullswater is reputedly one of the most beautiful lakes and is perhaps the most frequently photographed. I got a great photo of the lake with the clouds coming over it. While here we stayed in a bed and breakfast for a couple of nights of luxury to releive sore backs and allow a chance to unwind.
